Myth: Royal Mail Post vans can break the speed limit

Can Royal Mail vehicles really break the speed limit?

Myth

Royal Mail vehicles are the only vehicles in the UK that have the right to break the speed limit. This is because they are essentially owned by the Queen and they are the Queens Highways.

Reality

Come on. Be serious. For a start, the Queen doesn't actually "own" the Royal Mail, despite its name. According to Royal Mail Group website Royal Mail Group plc is a public limited company wholly owned by the Government, with annual sales in excess of £8 billion and more than 200,000 employees.

You might be surprised to know that NOBODY in the UK is allowed to break the speed limit, including the Police. However, there are conditions in which it is allowed or acceptable to break the speed limit. So in the case of the police, if it is necessary to break the speed limit in order to execute their duties, it is allowed. It is also acceptable for members of the public to break the speed limit under conditions where a serious matter requires it. For example, you are rushing somebody to hospital or you a fleeing for your life. So now you know, if you're ever looking for a good excuse.

See the Royal Mail Group Website for details of ownership.
