Myth: It is illegal in the UK for anyone under the age of 18 to consume an alcoholic drink in a public house, restaurant, beer garden

Is it illegal in the UK for anyone under the age of 18 to consume an alcoholic drink in a public house, restaurant or beer garden?

Myth

In the UK it is illegal for anybody under the age of 18 to drink in a restaurant, beer garden, public house etc. In order to drink alcohol, you must be over 18 years old.

Reality

As shocking as this might sound, it is actually NOT illegal for the under 18's to drink alcohol. Legal restrictions on the public house or bar only block the purchase and consumption of alcohol within the "bar". This is literally the bar in front of where beer, lager and spirits is sold.

But it is NOT illegal for under 18's to drink alcohol purchased for them by the over 18's, so long as they drink them away from the bar..... officer Happy
