"Captain Pugwash" really contain crew members with rude names
Myth
According to popular myth. the 70's children's cartoon series "Captain Pugwash" contained characters with such evocative names as Master Bates, Ben Dover, Seaman Staines and Roger the Cabin Boy.
As the series was essentially a filler in, it wasn't scrutinised until after the event. At which point it was too late.
Reality
Absolute tosh! The crew of the "Black Pig" were in fact;

Mr Mate
Jonah
Willy
Tom the Cabin Boy
The stories of the double entendres appear to have come out in the late 1980's and were published as fact in both the Sunday Correspondent and The Guardian. However, John Ryan, the series creator, had his revenge when he successfully sued both papers for printing the bogus legend.
