Myth
Can you drown if you eat before
swimming?
Myth
It is received knowledge that eating a meal and then going for a swim is highly likely to result in cramps and death by drowning in the worse case scenario.
Reality
My Mother used to warn of this death by drowning and sandwich and it never made sense to be then.
You are no more likely to suffer cramps following food than from having an empty stomach. That and the reality is that cramps, whilst painful, can be easily relieved and are unlikely to be deadly.
Handy hint. If you do get cramps while swimming, just tense and relax the muscle and use the other three good limbs.
