Who's Been Here

Myth: The Moon has no atmosphere

Is the moon really a terrible place to host a party?

Myth

The moon has no atmosphere. It is merely a gigantic rock floating in orbit around the Earth.

Reality

Along with a whole host of lunar anomalies, the moon does have an atmosphere. A 1993 study carried out by Boston University scientists observed that the moon’s atmosphere extends over 5,000 miles above its surface.

However, before you pack your bags for a visit, you should note that its composition is mainly sodium and is considerably less dense than that on Earth, by a magnitude of a billion times so.
