Myth: The moon is a broken off part of the Earth

Did the Earth really give birth to the moon?

Myth

The moon was created in tandem with the Earth during the very early stages of the creation of our solar system and is most likely a piece of the Earth perturbed by a passing comet or asteroid.

Reality

Much as we’d like to image the moon as being a companion to the Earth since forever, there are a number of key problems with this understanding.

Scientific studies of the Earth and Moon rocks have shown that not only is the moon older than the Earth it is composed of similar but fundamental different elements. For example, it is low on Iron Oxide (FeO)

Of course, there is a problem. Unlike on Earth, nobody has drilled into the Lunar surface to find older rocks. So analysis on the rocks on the Lunar surface only really provide information on what has fallen upon it. Its like analysing the composition of a wedding cake by looking at the top layer of icing. So for all we know, the moon could be just 100,000 years old and covered in very old dust Happy
