Myth
John Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) life long Director of the FBI and probably one of the most powerful people in US history used to like dressing up in women's clothing and preferred being called Mary.
Reality
There is absolutely no evidense to support the claims that Hoover was a transvestite or a homosexual.
The story originates from Walter Winchell the famed gossip columnist. Winchell was extremely popular and influential in shaping public opinion, notoriously aiding and ruining the careers of many entertainers and not a fan of Hoover.
